Over the years we've grown loads of different fruit and vegetables, we're often asked for tips on where to start.
If your looking to give it a go we'd recommend starting with Strawberries. They're so easy to grow and can be grown in the ground, in pots or even in random things like pallets. We made 2 large planters along our garden path to dedicate to our Strawberries and have a huge crop throughout the summer. The boys absolutely love to pick a few to snack on when playing in the garden.
We all love Strawberries in our house and the benefits for us are;
- Strawberries are expensive in supermarkets, growing your own can save a fortune over the summer months.
- Home grown Strawberries taste so much better, they're fresher and sweeter,. They're often not quite ripe when shop bought
- They're low maintenance and will grow almost anywhere
- It's fun for the kids to grow their own fruit and pick when ripe
- A few small plants quickly turns into a flower bed full giving a great crop of Strawberries.
- You can never have too many Strawberries as there's so many things that you can make with them, jam, deserts and cocktails
Strawberry plants send our runners which create new plants they will self root most of the time so if you start out with a couple of plants, in no time you can have a flower bed full. We now have so many runners each year that we give away plants to friends and family so that they can get started with someone their own.
Give it a try and let us know how you get on!
